Amman, Sept 10 (Petra) –– Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi and his Japanese counterpart Taro Kono Sunday agreed that the necessary steps be taken to enhance economic ties and security and defence cooperation between the two countries.
The ministers discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields and also agreed to build on the "positive outcome" and the cooperation agreements reached during His Majesty King Abdullah's visit to Japan in October, 2016, and Prime Minister Hani Mulki's trip to Japan in July this year.
Safadi stressed the solid strategic partnership between the two countries, welcoming a bigger role by Tokyo in the Middle East due to its moderate policy and the ability to make a difference at all levels.
Kono pledged Japan's commitment to supporting peace and stability in the Middle East, pointing out that Jordan is a key partner of his country in the region and lauding the Kingdom's support of efforts to bring about regional security and stability.
The Japanese minister, who is on his first visit to Jordan since taking office in August, also commended Jordan for hosting Syrian refugees, pledging Tokyo's support of the Kingdom to bear such burdens.
The ministers also discussed latest developments regarding efforts to jumpstart serious and effective peace talks to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution as the only solution.
The discussion also tackled the Syrian crisis and the war on terrorism, with the ministers reiterating their countries' commitment to fighting terror as a common enemy that must be defeated on all military, security and ideological fronts.
They stressed a political solution in Syria according to the Geneva1 resolutions and UN security Council resolution 2254, and called for intensified efforts to make progress toward reaching a solution to the crisis.
Safadi also briefed his Japanese counterpart about the results of Jordanian-Russian-US talks hosted by the Kingdom to set up de-escalation zones in southern Syria.
The meeting also dealt with the escalating crisis resulting from North Korean nuclear tests, and the ministers warned against the repercussions of the escalation on the region and global peace and security, calling on Pyongyang to stop nuclear tests and the development of ballistic missiles and to abide by relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
