(MENAFNEditorial) The University of Missouri St. Louis' College of Education launched its fifth cohort of the Create with Mastercard Education Entrepreneur in Residence program. During the four month incubation period participants learn about business concepts, receive mentoring and work with UMSL College of Education staff to bring their ideas to fruition.
The University of Missouri St. Louis' College of Education launched its fifth cohort of the Create with Mastercard Education Entrepreneur in Residenceprogram held on campus at the ED Collabitat. Backed by funding from Mastercard, the 'Edpreneur program incubates a select group of individuals who have an education focused business initiative.
During the four month incubation period participants learn about business concepts, receive mentoring and work with UMSL College of Education staff to bring their ideas to fruition. Last week nearly fifty people from the St. Louis community and University of Missouri St. Louis welcomed the new cohort.
Dr. Kathleen Fink, Assistant Dean of Professional Learning & Innovation and Executive Director of ED Collabitat explained to the attendees, 'UMSL's College of Education is committed to using innovation and professional creativity to be a leader both regionally and nationally as we find solutions to the challenges our students face daily. With strong community partners, consistent programming and passionate 'Edpreneurs we will continue to see scalable and sustainable non-profit and for-profit ventures emerge.
The participants will learn in depth about the local and national educational climate along with business principles. In addition to the curriculum resources provided, UMSL facility members serve as subject matter experts along with business leaders as mentors who support each venture.
Each 'Edpreneur has a specific business or service related to increasing the educational outcomes for students in the St. Louis region. An article in the by Dan Isenberg explains that entrepreneurship has become an economic development strategy for many cities throughout the country. The St. Louis entrepreneurship ecosystem has grown tremendously over the past decade making UMSL's 'Edpreneur program a unique and important addition to the ecosystem.
With most of the focus on technology and bio sciences (i.e. Cortex, TRex, CIC), the 'Edpreneur program intentionally turned the attention to education. 'It was extremely important to us to help youth based organizations and companies garner the support they need to have a positive impact on the lives of youth in our area, stated Amber Bell Christian, program producer, ED Collabitat and Edpreneur program leader.
Cohort 5 participants include Devon Moody-Graham, Sarah Hobson, Keona Griffin, Nadja Cajic, Nancy Jernigan, Winnie Caldwell, Allen Savage, Jaqui Melton, Marty Murray and Javania Webb. These participants along with cohort six participants (which begins in February) will present their businesses at the culminating showcase on May 8, 2018.
