Doha, Qatar:The Public Works Authority opened today two tunnels at Pearl Interchange, which are part of the Lusail Expressway.

Dr Saad bin Ahmad Al Muhannadi, President of the Public Works Authority said that the opening of the two tunnels at Pearl Interchange comes 10 days after the Prime Minister's visit to the project, during which he emphasised the need to open the tunnels during Eid Al Adha break, while the authority was also keen to open the tunnels before the beginning of the new academic year to ease traffic flow for citizens and residents.

The opening of the two tunnels comes as part of a series of upcoming openings before Eid, which include opening Ali bin Abi Talib Street, TV Intersection, Messila Tunnel, Jassim bin Hamad Street, in addition to Olympic Intersection which will be ready in the coming days.

Ashghal president noted that the two tunnels at Pearl Interchange that opened today will have a big impact on reducing traffic congestion at Pearl Interchange, but the full positive impact will be felt more after the full completion of Lusail Expressway in Q1, 2018.

The past few months witnessed opening several parts of Lusail Expressway, including the bridge at Al Khaleej Al Gharbi Interchange that opened in May, one month ahead of schedule, and the main tunnel at Onaiza Interchange which opened on 1st of April, in addition to opening the two tunnels at Pearl Interchange in August, also ahead of schedule.

Two tunnels at pearl Interchange:

The first tunnel is over 317 metres long in the direction from the Pearl to West Bay area, while the second tunnel is 408 metres long in the direction from West Bay to the Pearl. Each tunnel has three lanes and is 17 metres wide.

The Pearl Interchange is a three-level interchange and provides access from and to residential and business areas in Legtaifiya Lagoon area, also the Pearl metro station is nearby. The two tunnels will accommodate traffic coming to and from the Pearl and connect it with Lusail Expressway through the north and south canal crossings, which reduces traffic congestion at Pearl Interchange.

The Pearl Interchange will also help connect Doha with Lusail City and northern areas through the two canal crossings. The North Canal Crossing is 200 metres long and has six lanes in each direction, and provides direct access to Lusail City and northern areas, while the South Canal Crossing is 125 metres long and has eight lanes in each direction between Onaiza Interchange and Pearl Interchange.

Lusail Expressway:
Lusail Expressway is one of the key projects of the Expressway Programme that the Public Works Authority is implementing. It is located in a vital area that connects Doha with Lusail City, and covers many public destinations such as the Pearl in the north, via Katara and the Diplomatic Area, and a big number of residential areas, hotels, malls and other facilities.

The project work area stretches over 5.5 kilometre from Lusail City in the north to the West Bay area in the south. The project works include three main multi-level interchanges, which are the Pearl Interchange, Onaiza Interchange, and Al Khaleej Al Gharbi Interchange, in addition to two marine bridges over the South and North Canal Crossings near the Pearl and Lusail City.

Upon its completion, the main carriageway of Lusail Expressway will consist of four lanes in each direction, in addition to a big number of feeder service roads to connect the different destinations with the expressway.

The design also focuses on enhancing traffic safety for pedestrians and providing healthy lifestyle, through building 6.5 kilometres of separate pedestrians and cyclists paths.

The Unique Architectural Character for Lusail Expressway:

The architectural characteristic of the project is inspired by the old heritage Qatari and forms a combination of Qatar's past and future, given that it is the main expressway on the sea front that stretches over the northern coast of Doha City.
