VW engineer to be jailed 40 months over diesel cars scandal

(MENAFN) Former engineer at the German automaker Volkswagen was sentenced to be jailed for 40 months over his role in the company's diesel scandal that generated more pollution that US clean air rules allowed.

The US District Court judge in Detroit ordered James Liang to pay USD200,000 fine, 10 times the amount sought by federal prosecutors.

However, the judge said the prison sentence will deter other car industry engineers from similar schemes to deceive regulators and consumers.

Further, he was part of the conspiracy that perpetrated a stunning fraud on the American consumer, as his family looked on in the court.
