Stressing that the reunification of the Federal Republic of Somalia and Somaliland shall help make the Horn of Africa nation a great country again president Farmajo urged Somalis to put aside their differences and unite for the betterment of the present and future generations.
"I am urging our brothers in the northern regions (Somaliland), the youth, the elderly, men and women that it is our responsibility to regain our nationhood and unity of our country. Somaliland has been a sovereign but unrecognized nation since 1991 when it withdrew from its voluntary later turned fateful 1960 union with Somalia, a fact the war torn country in its South has failed to grasp for 27 years.
For Somalia a former Italian colony its 1960 and not ratified union with Somaliland a former British protectorate that attained an independence five days before the union is still its nation northern regions.
This adamancy by Somalia authorities holds no water in Somaliland which has been described as Africa's Best Kept Secret following success garnered in r its borders, creating a government with all relevant systems in place and a World acclaimed democratization process that has seen democratically elected administrations change office peacefully.
In Somaliland where 18th May the day it officially withdrew from union with Somalia in 1991 is more recognition robust than the low keyed 26th June Independence Day from Britain, reaction to the Farmajo reunification call was termed as daydreaming from r the never to be while the day's commemoration in Mogadishu was attributed to wishes of a defunct Somalia republic of the 1960s to early 1991
