Foreign Ministry praises Riyadh's meeting to unify Syrian opposition

(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its satisfaction on Saturday concerning the results of the Riyadh meeting to unify Syrian opposition forces.

Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said in a statement that the meeting in Saudi Arabia is a vital step to unify the Syrian opposition to begin the negotiation process between the government and the opposition under the supervision of the UN and the Vienna International Syria Support Group (ISSG) group.

Abu Zeid said these results would solve the Syrian crisis, eliminate terrorism there, and return its stability. It confirmed Egypt's effort to approach this in the upcoming period.

The statement also praised the meeting's closing statements that confirmed all the participants' faith in Syria and its sovereignty, their keenness to unify lands and to preserve the Syrian state organisations, and to achieve democracy without discrimination.

Abu Zeid considered their values consistent with Cairo's conference for the National Syrian opposition back in last June.

Last week, Saudi Arabia hosted a meeting between Syrian opposition groups, aiming to develop a unified voice for groups seeking the removal of the Syrian government including President Bashar Al-Assad.

More than 100 representatives of many different political and religious persuasions attended the meeting, including representatives of the Western-backed political alliance and the "National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces".
