The statement stressed the need to implement resolutions adopted at previous summits especially those relating to the Palestine-Israel issue. It also emphasized the importance of resolving the perennial Middle East conflict on the basis of the “land-for-peace” principle calling on Israel to immediately apply past UN Security Council resolutions on the issue. The communiqué went on to condemn Israel’s many violations against civilians in the blockaded Gaza Strip since June of last year while also demanding Israel’s withdrawal from Palestinian territory occupied in 1967 and the release of all Palestinian and Arab political prisoners. Summit participants also called for the territorial integrity of Syria to be maintained stressing the need to reach a peaceful solution to the country’s ongoing political crisis. The Arab-South American Summit was first held in Brazil (2005) then in Qatar (2009) and Peru (2012) with the stated aim of promoting political and economic ties between the Arab region and South America.
