Arab League welcomes Vatican decision to recognise State of Palestine

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The League of Arab States on Sunday welcomed the Vatican's decision to officially recognise the State of Palestine.

In a statement released today, Mohammad Subeih, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States for Palestine and the Occupied Arab Territories Affairs, said that the recognition of Palestine by the Vatican is a promising decision that will open many doors in the future.

Subeih added that the number of countries which have recognised the State of Palestine is more than 136 countries, which, he said, and is larger than the number of countries which have recognised Israel since its establishment.

On Wednesday, the Vatican officially recognised a Palestinian state in a new treaty.

The treaty, which still has to be signed, makes clear that the Holy See has switched its diplomatic relations from the Palestinian Liberation Organisation to the state of Palestine, according to AP.

The Vatican had welcomed the decision by the UN General Assembly in 2012 to recognise a Palestinian state.
