Tunisia parliament mulls intelligence oversight law

(MENAFN - The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) A Tunisian parliamentary committee on Monday called for legislation allowing greater oversight of the country's intelligence agencies and their activities.

Parliament's Committee for Managing the Affairs of Weapons-Bearing Forces on Tuesday called for a legislative initiative aimed at allowing parliamentary oversight of the country's intelligence bodies, committee head Jalel Ghedira told The Anadolu Agency.

"This initiative aims to ensure the effectiveness of intelligence agencies and evaluate their performance," Ghedira said, adding that the initiative would be supervised by a team including lawmakers and a parliament-appointed chairman.

At Tuesday's session, the committee agreed to form a panel tasked with overseeing intelligence activities pertaining to phone taps and internet surveillance.

The committee announced it was currently discussing the establishment of a national agency that would operate as an umbrella for Tunisia's intelligence bodies.
