OIC welcomes Palestine ICC membership

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) welcomed Thursday the official accession of Palestine to the International Criminal Court on April 1st.

Joining the ICC to become the 123rd member is a natural right for Palestine and an embodiment of its legal personality on the international level, OIC's Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani said in a statement.

Madani expressed his hope that this important step becomes a legal prelude to the accountability of the Israeli occupation for its crimes in the Gaza Strip and the entire Palestinian lands, particularly the continuation of settlement and occupation policy, and seizure of Palestinian tax funds without any legal justification.

He also renewed his support for Palestine's accession to ICC in light of Israel's "intransigent" stands, rejection to abide by its commitments, and continued violation of international law.

"This is in line with the previous position of the OIC announced at the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers last May and other subsequent meetings which affirmed the right of Palestine to accede to the International Criminal Court and to complete its accession to other international institutions," Madani noted.
