Greek FM: issue of recognition of Palestine to go before Greek parliament

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The foreign minister of the new Greek government, Nikos Kotzias, Monday praised the role of Gulf countries in particular Kuwait in promoting regional peace and stability.

"We are friends of these Gulf countries (like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia). We know that these countries have a lot to contribute to peace, stability and development in the region," he told the Kuwait news agency (KUNA) in Brussels where he is attending a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

"We hope that we could use their friendly positions for the benefit of the two peoples and the development of the two countries (Greece and Kuwait)," said Kotzias, who started his statement to KUNA by saying "Salam Alaikum." In reply to a question if Greece will recognize the Palestinian state he said "as far as I know the issue will be put before the Greek Parliament and we will be positive in the parliament." But he did not clarify when this will happen but noted that one EU country Sweden has till now recognized Palestine.

Meanwhile, analysts here note that Israel is concerned after the formation of the leftwing-led government in Greece.

The current prime minister and leader of the ruling left-wing Syriza party, Alexis Tsipras, is considered to be a supporter of the Palestinian cause.

Last year he took part in an anti-Israel rally in Athens following Israel's military onslaught in Gaza in which over 2,000 Palestinians, including hundreds of children, were killed.

Tsipras stated during the march that "we should unite our voices and forces so as to live in peace, expressing our solidarity to the Palestinian people."
