(MENAFN- The Peninsula) In a key development that may have serious consequence for the future politics of Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has decided to file Rs20bn defamation suit against Imran Khan after his party's proposed Azadi March on August 14.
"The defamation case will be filed after August 14 with the Islamabad session court as stipulated in the law," Arsalan Iftikhar, the son of former chief justice said on Friday.
Two weeks ago, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had sent a legal notice to Imran Khan under Section 9 of the Defamation Ordinance 2002 for the recovery of Rs20bn in damages to the reputation and image of the former chief justice. The PTI chief had accused the former chief justice of poll rigging in the 2013 general election.
"Legal period of 14 days had elapsed after the serving of defamation notice to Imran Khan, and he has failed to apologise to former CJP. Now preparations are underway to give final shape to defamation case," Arsalan said.
He said the former CJP is seeking copies of affidavit filed by Imran Khan in the Supreme Court in contempt of court case against him and as soon as the relevant record is received the case will be lodged in the Islamabad Court as per law.
"The legal team has already gathered all other relevant documents for the filing of the case," he said adding that the Supreme Court records will be used as documentary evidence in support of the defamation case.
