Conmex 2011
From the world’s tallest building to the first zero-carbon city, the GCC region has over the past decade pushed the limits of what can be achieved in construction.
And, despite the slowdown in the global economy, it continues to lead the world in the scale and ambition of its projects.
Locally, the UAE's construction sector is expected to bounce back in 2011 with a large number of projects set to be awarded this year, a study has revealed.
Projects worth US$ 714.8 billion are currently either at design stage or under way in the country.
This trend is expected to continue in the short term with the UAE government’s drive to stimulate the economy by spending heavily on infrastructural development, including nuclear power plants and rail projects.
These activities are set to drive demand for construction equipment, vehicles, machinery, cranes, tools & special systems, formwork safety devices, commercial vehicles and other related products and services.
The Middle East being a re-export hub due to its strategic location also sees good demand for commercial vehicles to transport goods across the country.
The oil and gas sector in the country and the rest of the GCC are cruising ahead on relatively high prices. Gulf-based oil firms are planning massive upstream investments worth $365 billion in the sector in the near future. This will result in the region seeing the emergence of several new manufacturing units and oil and gas facilities, triggering demand for heavy vehicles such as trailers, oil tankers, LNG carriers and the likes.
Besides, tens of thousands of trucks are deployed by construction and logistics firms on a daily basis to transport building materials and other goods. Both road-going and non-road trucks suffer from a common problem – wear, damage and carry back due to hauling rocks, sand, gravel and other materials. Vehicle bodies need to be customized according to the nature of the goods they carry and this area holds huge potential in the UAE as well as the region due to their reliance on construction and logistics sector.
