Indonesia’s President Pays Tribute to Earthquake Victims

Date:

(MENAFN) Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto pays tribute to victims of a devastating earthquake as the country celebrates its 81st Independence Day, with at least 53 people reported dead following the disaster.

Prabowo offers prayers before observing a moment of silence during the national Independence Day ceremony at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, according to reports.

“Let us observe a moment of silence to remember the souls and services of the heroes of our nation’s independence who sacrificed their lives and bodies for the independence and honor of the Indonesian nation,” Prabowo says.

The president also remembers communities affected by natural disasters across Sumatra, East Nusa Tenggara and other regions of the country, offering prayers for those who have suffered losses.

The latest tribute comes after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes East Nusa Tenggara over the weekend, resulting in dozens of deaths and widespread destruction.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency says 53 people have died, 135 others have been injured and 154 homes have sustained damage following the earthquake, according to reports.
