Fire Erupts on Two Vessels at Egypt’s Damietta Port Without Casualties
(MENAFN) Egyptian authorities said a fire broke out Wednesday on a regasification vessel and a storage vessel at Damietta Port along the Mediterranean coast, with no injuries or deaths reported, according to official statements.
The Petroleum Ministry said firefighting and security teams responded immediately and quickly contained the blaze after it ignited aboard the two vessels.
Officials confirmed that no casualties resulted from the incident, adding that emergency crews are continuing technical evaluations while authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.
The ministry did not disclose the cause of the blaze and urged media organizations and social media users to rely solely on official statements for updates.
According to reports, a US-owned and operated floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage facility sailing under the Marshall Islands flag was struck while at the port.
Separate reports also said an explosion occurred at the port’s LNG terminal during cargo discharge operations. Local authorities brought the situation under control, moved the affected vessels outside the port area, and expected activities at the remaining berths and terminals to resume overnight.
