S. Sudanese rival factions sign Cairo Declaration to end war

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Nov 16 (KUNA) -- South Sudan's two rival factions, affiliated with the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), signed Thursday the "Cairo Declaration of Unification" to end the ongoing conflict and achieve peace in the country.

The two parties signed the declaration at the General Intelligence headquarters in Cairo under the auspices of President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi and Uganda's President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Egypt's State Information Service (SIS) said in a statement.

"It is an important step in supporting peace and ending the war between the factions in the neighboring Republic of South Sudan," said SIS.

The statement stressed the importance of the declaration in supporting peace and ending the war between factions in South Sudan.

The declaration is also a political entry point for the return of refugees and displaced persons to their areas of origin, said SIS.

Meanwhile, the two South Sudanese parties agreed that the Egyptian General Intelligence would coordinate with them and follow up the implementation of what was agreed upon in Cairo.

They also described the Egyptian-Ugandan political effort to cooperate with South Sudan as a "main base" for supporting regional stability.

Egypt hosted a meeting from Monday to Thursday for SPLM and its former leaders that was, eventually, crowned by the signing of the Cairo Declaration, said the warring factions. (end) rg.ma
