AIDS activists call for Cole resignation as amfAR chairman

(MENAFN) Due to a controversial agreement made by Kenneth Cole with Harvey Weinstein, several of the well known AIDS activists in the nation are demanding for his dismissal as head of prominent AIDS research charity amfAR.

An open letter has been signed by at least sixty individuals, counting Olympic diver Greg Louganis, playwright Larry Kramer and former amfAR board member Peter Staley. The demand is for Cole to either tender his resignation or be replaced as board chairman of amfAR. In case their demand wasn't met, they have insisted for an intervention by lead prosecutor of New York.

The letter targets the deal involving Cole and Weinstein which agrees to divide the profit of a number of charity auction objects among amfAR and a theater where a show produced by Weinstein was performed.

AIDS activist Staley released a statement saying "Kenneth has made valuable contributions to amfAR over the years. But this controversy and the ensuing extraordinary divisions within amfAR's board make it essential to turn the page and let amfAR's staff focus solely on its mission."
