UN mission in Libya condemns attacks on Derna

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW York, Oct 31 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Tuesday condemned air strikes launched against residential districts in Derna city, east of Libya, last night that killed and wounded several civilians.

Information UNSMIL received said that at least 12 children and women were killed, and seven others, including four children, were wounded, UN Secretary General's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing.

The mission called for urgent humanitarian aid access to Derna and remove all obstacles in this regard, the briefing said.

The UNSMIL renewed that the international humanitarian law bans launching direct or random attacks against civilians, urging all parties to be committed to the protection of civilians, it noted.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Council of Libya's UN-backed unity government said last night that it appealed to the UN Security Council to open an investigation into these attacks in the city of Derna. (end) asf.hm
