President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, and the delegation accompanying him visited yesterday the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) as part of the president's ongoing visit to the country.
The Sri Lankan president toured the departments and pavilions of the museum and examined its collections of Islamic antiquities and artifacts that include rare treasures of heritage, including books, manuscripts and coins made of silver, copper and bronze, in addition to items made of glass, ivory, textiles, wood and precious stones, and artifacts collected from three continents that date 14 centuries back.
The president of Sri Lanka listened to a briefing about the Museum of Islamic Art, the stages of its establishment and its role in spreading science and culture and encouraging creativity and interaction with the cultures and arts of the world.
After the tour, the President wrote in the museum's golden register: 'The breathtaking collection of Islamic art and antiquities from the seventh to the 19th century meticulously displayed in this Museum of Islamic Art speaks of a civilisation that flourished under Islam embracing many nations and influencing a countless number of people. It showcases the sense of aesthetics and technical skills of the artists the president wrote.
'I consider it a great privilege to pay a visit to the museum on the occasion of my state visit to Qatar, which has given me a great insight into these works of art in the spirit of the present moment, while also reflecting on the context in which they arose, the president added. A huge book about the Museum of Islamic Art was awarded to HE the president of Sri Lanka during the visit and, in turn, he awarded a valuable artifact to the museum.
