(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Egypt qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia when it beat Congo 2-1 in its qualifier played in Alexandria on Sunday night.
It is the first time the North African side dubbed the 'Pharaohs' has reached the world showpiece event in 28 years.
The win sent thousands of fans across the country celebrating.
Understandably, Egyptian expatriates in Oman too are in high spirits.
'I'm very happy as Egypt reached the World Cup in Russia. The victory came after an almost 30-year wait. It was a tough match but Egypt won it deservedly. After the match, we went to Al Khuwayr. There were some Egyptians and Arabs gathered together to celebrate. We raised the Egyptian flag,' said Ahmed Hussein.
Egypt last reached the final round of the tournament in Italy, in 1990.
Hisham Mousa, another Egyptian working in Muscat, praised Mohamed Salah's fine play in the qualifier. The Liverpool winger scored both goals for his country.
'Mohamed Salah's nerves of steel backed by a hundred million Egyptians send Egypt to the World Cup in Russia after a thrilling win over Congo,' Mousa said.
'Egyptian prayers and dreams have come true after almost 28 years of failed attempts. We are so proud of this achievement not only as Egyptians but as the whole Arab world and specially our Omani brothers and sisters, who shared our joy and celebration over this great accomplishment. They have showered us with their wishes. Well done Egypt! Thank you Oman.'
'It was a hard-fought win,' said Mohamed Mostafa, adding, 'It was not easy out there. We won because of the team's determination. This is the third time Egypt has reached the finals. First it was in 1934, then in 1990. It was great joy watching Egypt win and people showing their love for this great game.'
Mahmoud Mohammed said, he would like to see more countries from the region joining Egypt in the finals.
'An indescribable feeling...I 'm very happy, of course. I hope Morocco, Tunisia and Syria will join Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Five Arab teams in the World Cup, God willing.'
Ahmed El Shenawy said, 'I can't describe my feeling of joy. The first time I watched Egypt in the World Cup was in 1990. Then I was six years. I am fortunate enough to see it happening again.'
