(MENAFN- Gulf Times) HE the Adviser to the Minister of Interior, Major General Dr Abdullah Yousuf al-Mal, said that Qatar will continue its commitment to combat transnational organised crime and associated crimes such as terrorism, violent extremism, drugs, corruption, money laundering and others.
This came in a statement delivered by Dr al-Mal at a meeting held on Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime to implement the Doha Declaration adopted at the 13th UN Congress on Crime, Prevention and Criminal Justice.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the the UN General Assembly session.
The delegation was headed by Dr al-Mal, and included HE the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry Dr Ahmed bin Hassan al-Hammadi. The meeting was also attended by Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN HE ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani, and Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN Office at Geneva HE ambassador Ali al-Mansouri.
Dr al-Mal referred to the agreement reached by Qatar with the UN Office to launch the World Programme for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration, noting the contribution of Qatar to finance the implementation of the programme which amounted to $49mn for the period 2016-2020.
He said it was the first time in the history of the UN Office that the host state donates to the implementation of the recommendations of the conference and, for the first time, one state provides funding of this magnitude and comprehensiveness.
He stressed Qatar's firm approach to promoting world development and its continued support for the lofty message of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security and achieving international co-operation to resolve issues of economic, social, cultural and humanitarian significance.
He commended the Doha Congress, which adopted the principle of 'integrating crime prevention into the wider agenda of the United Nations as its logo and programme of action, thereby giving a comprehensive and multidisciplinary nature to crime prevention and criminal justice issues.
