Baghdad calls on Irbil to hand over oil facilities, border crossings

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BAGHDAD, Sept 24 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi ministerial council for national security called on Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to hand over the oil facilities, airports and border crossings, and urged the neighboring countries to slap embargo on the region.

The council convened under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi late Sunday on the eve of the controversial referendum on the independence of Iraq's northern region.

It decided that the border crossings and airports fall under the jurisdiction of the federal government in Baghdad and that the oil resources belong to the Iraqi people under the constitution of the country.

Therefore, the Iraqi federal government calls on Kurdistan region to hand over the border crossings and airports as well as the oil facilities in order to enable the federal government to facilitate the flow of commodities and movement of individuals from and to the region.

It also urges Iraq's friends, particularly the neighboring countries, not to deal with the government in Irbil in such affairs and deal with the federal government instead, according to a press release issued by Al-Abadi's office following the meeting.

The council also dealt with the measures to be adopted by the competent authorities, including the panel on retrieval of public funds and follow-up on banks accounts of KRG officials accused of manipulating the oil revenues.

The council asked the public prosecutor to start legal proceedings against the KRG officials involved in organization of the referendum.

It noted that it will remain in session to follow up the developments in the region and oversee the measures to be taken by the federal government defend the unity, security and sovereignty of Iraq pursuant to the provisions of the constitution. (pickup previous)
