AMMAN — Health minister Mahmoud Shayab Saturday visited 20 people in a hospital in the city of Salt, where they were admitted after falling ill in a mass food poisoning incident, according to a ministry statement.

Health ministry spokesman, Hatem Azruei, said the patients, who ate contaminated food at a local restaurant Friday, had shown poisoning symptoms after ‏epidemiological tests.

The minister had directed health officials to provide the best service to the patients.

Azruei said authorities were asked to shut down the eatery as a precaution as lab tests were conducted on food samples.

He said that up to 20 people affected were admitted to the Al Hussein Government Hospital and were offered the necessary healthcare, but only nine remained under observation and will be discharged today or tomorrow at the latest.
