(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) (Pajhwok): Hundreds of residents of Kabul condemned the killing of Muslims in Myanmar at a protest demonstration, asking international human rights organisations to help end the humanitarian catastrophe.
The violence against Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim minority has forced tens of thousands of people to flee. The intensifying violence has left nearly 400 people dead and many more displaced.
Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar have been subject to various crises for 60 years. Buddhist extremists started killing Muslims and forcing them into fleeing their areas in recent years.
According to reports, more than 120,000 Rohingya people have fled Myanmar to Bangladesh due to the ongoing violence there.
The Rohingya Muslims currently live in temporary tents and are under close police surveillance. They are restricted from moving out of their areas.
In reaction to the atrocities against Muslims in Myanmar, hundreds of Kabul residents including scholars and civil activists gathered in front of the Eidgah and strongly condemned the violence.
Mulavi Attaullah Faizani, a Kabul provincial council member who also participated in the protest, called the mass killing of Rohingya Muslims an organised humanitarian disaster.
He asked the United Nations and UN's Human Rights Council to break their silence on the atrocities of the Myanmar government. If the situation persists, Afghans were ready to stand against the mass killing of Muslims, he said.
Mulavi Shamsur Rahman, a religious scholar and participant of the protest, said: 'Muslims should speak up against the cruelty targeting their brethern in different parts of the .'
Muslims should be aware of each other and Islamic countries should also raise their voice against the crimes of Buddhists, he added.
'The world should know that slogans of human rights by UNHRC are untrue and deceptive. If this organisation really works for human rights, then why is it silent on the situation of Muslims?' he asked.
A number of other speakers also condemned the violence and asked human rights bodies to address the problem.
The Afghan government also asked the UN, human rights organisations and the global fraternity to put an end to the humanitarian disaster and help the affected people with a sense of urgency.
