Jordan- King, Norway Crown Prince open the 1st phase of the Sahara project


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Aqaba, Sept. 7 (Petra)-- His Majesty King Abdullah II along with Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Norway, Haakon, inaugurated the first phase of the Sahara project, which aims at greening 2,000 dunums in the port city of Aqaba.

The project, an eco-project co-funded by the European Union and the Kingdom of Norway, is a model for future ventures required to be brought to Aqaba and is one of the projects that fall within the concepts of sustainable development.

The project will contribute in achieving the concepts of water, food and energy security.

The three-phase project is an integrated one since it includes three major elements including agriculture, investment and environment.

The project will be totally reliant on domestic natural resources, namely, sea water by using modern technology in the process of evaporation to produce potable water, generating electricity and food production.

His Majesty and Prince Haakon were briefed by the CEO of the Sahara Forest Project, Joakim Hauge, on modern technology used in the project and its final stages of completion.

The inauguration was attended by the Prime Minister, the Lower House speaker, the Royal Court chief, the director of the King's Office, the ministers of Planning and International Cooperation, environment, agriculture, energy and mineral resources, the Chief of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, the Norwegian minister of Climate and Environment and the Norwegian ambassador in Amman.
