(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Aug 29 (Petra) –– Jordan Tuesday condemned the storming of the Al Aqsa Mosque/ Haram Al Sharif by two members of the Israeli Knesset, who broke into the holy compound in occupied East Jerusalem this morning under police escort.
State Minister for Media Affairs and official government spokesman, Mohammad Momani, said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to lift a ban on visits to Al Aqsa Mosque by Knesset members is "an irresponsible move" that would exacerbate tension at the site, which is sacred to all Muslims across the world.
He said "we all" look forward to seeing steps that would help international efforts, particularly those by the United States, to jump start Palestinian-Israeli peace talks to bring about peace based on the two-state solution and international terms of reference, but not "such condemned and rejected" measures.
Momani demanded that Israel, as the occupying power, take measures to stop the provocations by (Jewish) extremists against Al Aqsa, the third holiest shrine to Muslims, and to maintain the ban on visits to the compound by Israeli lawmakers and ministers, which was introduced by Netanyahu about two years ago.
