One in five kids can take a selfie but over half have never climbed a tree Kingswood reveals today's six-year-olds can take selfies and make YouTube videos but have never climbed a tree or started a fire Quarter of parents now spending less than 30 minutes outside with their offspring per week Over half of UK families admit 'watching TV' with their kids is the only quality time they spend together

A study into family activities has shown one in five (20%) parents admit to having taught their six-year-old child to take a selfie, while one in ten have even shown their kid the art of filming a YouTube video.

When asked how they spend quality time together as a family, over half of mums and dads (55%) confessed that watching TV was the main activity they did with their children.

Despite this, over a third (39%) of 2,000 parents surveyed by Kingswood also expressed their concern over the effect technology was having on their child's development before their 7th birthday.

Screen-time has become such a big part of life that a quarter (20%) of mums and dads are now spending less time outside with their offspring at just 30 minutes per week.

This has meant that more than half of kids have shockingly never climbed a tree (51%) or built a fire (78%).

Jason Andrews, Chief Operating Officer at Kingswood, says: 'Exploring the great outdoors is a fundamental part of a child's development. Parents often underestimate how important it is just to get outside. It's more important than ever for parents to continue to encourage their child to try new things – rather than just watching the television or constantly surfing social media.'

Mr Andrews added: 'At Kingswood we put an emphasis on creating special unforgettable memories with families and encourage both children and parents to have minimal screen time and really throw themselves into the outdoor experience when they're visiting our camps. We want them to face the adventure together in the great outdoors.'
