Paris seeks to reassure Beijing after Police shoot Chinese national dead

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, March 28 (KUNA) -- French authorities on Tuesday sought to reassure China on security for Chinese nationals here after a Chinese national was shot dead by police last Sunday in a disputed incident.

Police claim they shot the man as he attacked police when they were called relative to a domestic dispute and that the victim wielded a knife and wounded an officer before being shot.

This version is hotly contested by the man's family and lawyer who say police broke in and shot the unarmed man after a complaint over noise at their home in the 19th district of Paris.

Chinese authorities have since issued a public call on France to better protect its citizens here.

The call came after 150 people from the Chinese community clashed Monday night with police in the Paris district and 35 of them were arrested, several were injured as were two police officers.

"An enquiry is currently underway to shed light on the circumstances which led to the death of a Chinese national on Sunday March 26 in the 19th district of Paris," Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said in answer to questions to the emerging diplomatic spat.

The French Consul General was summoned in Beijing concerning the incident.

"The security of all Chinese nationals in France is a priority for the French authorities," Nadal added, citing reinforced measures these past months and noting this information has been channelled to Chinese authorities via the French Consul. (end) jk.mt
