Kuwaiti parliamentarian stripped of immunity

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, March 28 (KUNA) -- The National Assembly on Tuesday lifted immunity of National Assembly member Ahmad Nabil Al-Fadhl.

The parliament, which approved a public prosecution's request to lift Al-Fadhl's immunity, turned down identical requests concerning legislators Dr. Jamaan Al-Herbesh and Naif Al-Ajmi.

Up to 34 MPs, out of 47 attending ones, voted in favor of stripping immunity of Al-Fadhl, in relation to the appealed case titled, "Al-Salam's misdemeanor." The prosecution sought legal action against Al-Herbesh and Al-Ajmi in State security and State security misdemeanors. However, only 26 members of the parliament voted for lifting the couple's immunity -- out of 52 present legislators.

Chairman of the parliamentary legislative and legal affairs commission, MP Mohammad Al-Dallah, made a presentation at start of the immunity deliberations about the general prosecution's requests.

National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim lifted today's session because of a lack of quorum. It will resume at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. (end) jy.rk
