ABU DHABI, 3rd December, 2016 (WAM) -- Dr. Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Speaker of Federal National Council, FNC, on Saturday briefed Irina Bokova, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, on the agenda of the Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, to be held in Abu Dhabi on 12th and 13th December.

The event will be held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood.

A total of 52 women speakers of parliaments from around the world will take part in the summit, deemed to be the first of its kind in the parliamentary history globally, she noted during a meeting in Abu Dhabi, where Bokova participated in the two-day conference on Safeguarding Endangered Cultural Heritage, which concluded today in the UAE capital.

The summit would be held under the main theme "United for Shaping the Future", Al Qubaisi said.

Al Qubaisi underscored the role of UNESCO in promoting culture, education and protection of cultural heritage and commended co-operation between the UAE and the international organisation.

The UAE is a member of the 1972 World Heritage Convention, she noted.

Al Qubaisi also stressed that the FNC is playing an important role in promoting culture and heritage through the development of legislation.

Last year, the FNC passed a legislation on the protection of ancient sites, traditional buildings and other antiquities, she said.
