Al Jaber presides UAE delegation at Annual Ministerial Meeting of Group of 77 and China

NEW YORK, 24th September, 2016 (WAM)--Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State, has presided the UAE delegation at the Annual Ministerial Meeting of the Group of 77 and China held in New York on the sidelines of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He delivered the UAE statement in this meeting which emphasised the need to capitalise on the strength of the G77 in addressing the most pressing challenges today, highlighting the UAE's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, addressing climate change, women's empowerment and humanitarian relief.

Dr. Al Jaber highlighted the role of G77 and China as the largest intergovernmental organisation of developing countries in the UN. "It is important for the Group to keep the positive momentum towards achieving economic, social and environmental sustainability for all developing nations," he said.

The UAE minister also stressed the importance of the active inclusion of women, saying, "The UAE recognises that empowering women locally and globally, and involving them in all aspects of development is an integral part to the success of our collective goals."

He added, "We are proud to host the UN Women's first liaison office in the Arab Gulf Region."

Dr. Al Jaber extended an invitation to all members to the upcoming 2016 Global South-South Development Expo from 31st October to 3rd November in Dubai, where members of the group, the UN and private sector participants will have the opportunity to discuss and promote the innovative solutions created by developing countries to help in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
