DOHA: Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) was the first charity to respond from outside Iraq to rescue thousands of internally displaced people (IDP) in Irbil, the capital of Kurdistan, and provide urgent humanitarian aid.

The ill-fated people left their homes in Mosul city and neighboring area due to unrest and settled in area 45 km away from Irbil. The RAF provided basic food items and urgent humanitarian aid to more than 10,000 displaced people within two days of the start of the crisis in Iraq.

A delegation from RAF led by Dr Ayed bin Dabssan Al Qahtani, Chairman, Board of Trustees and General Director, RAF, visited Irbil recently to get first hand information about the situation of displaced people. The delegation was accompanied by correspondents of Qatari local media including Qatar News Agency, Qatar TV and Al Jazeera English.

The delegation also supervised food distributions during their stay in Irbil. The beneficiaries received baskets of foodstuff including rice, edible oil, sugar and lentils among other items - enough for a family for a month.

More than 1,200 families received food baskets at the Dibka camp stadium located at a distance of 45 km from Irbil. The delegation held discussions with local partners of RAF and made arrangements to continue the supply of basic foods to displaced people.

The delegation noted that the number of displaced people increased on a daily basis, with dozens of new families turning up at the camp to collect aid.
