The Children's Oncology Ward at The Royal Hospital was all abuzz as McDonald's Birdie made its presence felt to mark the iconic brand's support toward the celebration of the Nelson Mandela International Day organised by the South African Embassy in Muscat.

The United Nations designated Nelson Mandela International Day in 2009 in recognition of the former South African President's contribution to the culture of peace and freedom. Mandela wanted to do good for the world and his good work is being continued.

Every year people around the world are encouraged to spend 67 minutes of their day in service together.

Busi Mangoegape, the embassy's political counsellor and deputy head of the mission, said, 'Nelson Mandela served humanity. He's our inspiration, he's our icon, so we want to give something back especially to the cancer-afflicted children.'

She added, 'The legacy he left is also to carry the baton after his death to be in service to each other.'

South African embassy staff along with McDonald's representatives wore shirts that read 'Take Action. Inspire Change. Make Everyday a Mandela Day'.

McDonald's' involvement in community events is part of its ongoing commitment to give back to the local community.
