UAE- Trio accused of selling cocaine worth Dh50,000

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Three men were arrested by the police for involvement in selling a quantity of cocaine to an undercover police officer, the Court of First Instance was told.

The 33-year-old Syrian jobless, and his two friends - a 33-year-old Spanish and 45-year-old Australian (both tourists), were all arrested on May 18, last year.

They were all charged with possessing drugs for selling. Two of them have been accused of taking drugs.

A police lieutenant said they arranged for a sting operation to arrest the Australian accused red-handed. "We had a tip-off that he possessed a quantity of cocaine and was looking to sell it for Dh50,000".

A meeting was arranged between the suspect and an undercover cop. But the suspect later changed the meeting venue. "We sent our officer to a hotel in Al Muraqqabat which was chosen by the defendant as the place to meet. The first accused came instead of the other accomplice."

The first accused was arrested after allegedly selling the drugs.

"We retrieved the money belonging to the police from him. He confessed that he was to get Dh10,000 while the Spanish was to receive the remaining Dh40,000."

During that time the Syrian was getting phone calls from the second defendant.

"The latter was arrested soon after we obtained a prosecution warrant. He was in his flat in Dubai Marina. He had powder on his nose which we suspected was cocaine," the lieutenant said. "That accused claimed he got the drugs from a French man. He said he was to be paid Dh3,000 only."

The officer quoted the Syrian as saying that the other defendant gave him a small quantity of cocaine to sell since he did not know the buyer.

The third accused was apprehended in Deira three days later.
