1% of Kuwait's population hit by stroke per year: MoH

Health Ministry Undersecretary Dr Khaled Al-Sahlawi speaking at the press conference KUWAIT CITY, July 22: One percent of Kuwait's population experience stroke each year and Health Ministry Undersecretary Dr Khaled Al-Sahlawi expects this percentage to increase in the next two decades due to the rising life expectancy.

In a press conference organized Thursday by the ministry to launch the national program on stroke, Al- Sahlawi confirmed the issuance of a directive to create a national database for all stroke cases in the country.

He disclosed the database shall consist of relevant information while unveiling a plan to construct more stroke units in hospitals. He said the five big hospitals in Kuwait have started providing blood clot remedies to patients who experienced stroke and he considers this a remarkable achievement. He cited the health survey conducted in 2014 in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO); indicating the diabetes rate reached 20 percent, blood pressure 25 percent, obesity 40 percent, smoking 20.5 percent, body fatigue 62.5 percent and high cholesterol 55.9 percent.

Based on these figures and the dangerous repercussions of experiencing stroke, the ministry has laid down a plan to form a national committee for stroke, he added. He said a national committee was formed in 2015 and it consists of medical experts in the fields of accidents, nervous system, internal medicine and X-ray in the five big hospitals in Kuwait.

This is in addition to the representatives of Quality and Detection Department led by Chairman of the Stroke Unit at Amiri Hospital Dr Khaled Al-Hassan. He revealed the committee's functions include consolidating efforts towards the early detection of stroke considering immediate treatment leads to high recovery rate.

Meanwhile, Al-Hassan affirmed the committee is exerting tremendous efforts to put forward national protocols on stroke for implementation in all hospitals.
