Algerian Officer Trespasses Moroccan Border to Seek Asylum

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) An Algerian police officer slipped across the Moroccan border through a major crossing point, known as Zouj Bghal, in order to seek asylum in Morocco, according to the Alyaoum24 news site.

The same source also stated that immediately after setting foot on Moroccan soil, on Saturday, the interloper took a taxi to the Ouajda police headquarters where he then applied for asylum.

The source proclaimed additionally that Moroccan authorities interrogated the Algerian officer before deporting him, on the same day, back to his country of origin.

The deserter had allegedly decided to seek asylum in Morocco in an effort to escape social and economic crises which have rocked his country after oil price declines in recent years.

The same source also reported that the defector was fleeing family problems which had further compelled him to leave his home country.

Morocco-Algeria borders remain closed, after more than 20 years, and now tensions between the neighboring countries are escalating over the issue of the Sahara, where Algeria has been explicitly involved in backing, by providing the entirety of assistance offered, separatists in the Tindouf camps.
