Greek Cyprus tourism heads for record


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >Bailed-outGreekCyprus recordeda 40-percent hike in tourist arrivalsin March setting the stagefor a record year for the holidayisland and indicating an economicrevival official data showedon April 18.

Tourist arrivals already hita 14-year high in 2015 reaching2.65 million on the back of acheaper euro.

“The large increase recordedin March ... shows at an earlystage that this year if somethingunexpected does not occurwill be the year with the highestnumber of arrivals in the historyof [Greek] Cyprus tourism”state-run Cyprus Tourism Organisationsaid.

“Already the first quarterrecorded a strong increaseof 32.4 percent compared tothe first quarter of 2015 withnearly all markets showinggrowth.”

Despite the euro faring betterthis year experts say Cyprus isattracting more tourists becauseit is seen as a safe destination ina turbulent region dogged by terrorattacks such as in Egypt Turkeyand Tunisia.

The number of tourists arrivingon the eastern Mediterraneanholiday spot in March reached137013 compared to 97479 inthe same month last year an increaseof 40.6 percent the statisticalservice said.
