Oman- Up to one year jail RO500 fine for jumping red light

The ROP has said that jumping a red light will attract up to a year in jail or RO500 fine or both. Motorists stopping across the line at a red light will be fined RO35.

Lt Col Zayed al Hosni from ROP's Directorate General of Traffic has said that if reckless driving results in a person becoming sick or injured and unable to attend work for more than ten days or dies the driver is liable to one to five years in prison.

Lt Col Hosni said surveillance cameras at intersections are helping reduce accidents.

Commenting on ROP's campaign against the use of phones while driving Lt Col Hosni cited data which shows that reaction time slows down by 27 per cent while talking on the phone and by 37 per cent if texting.

According to a survey he cited 72 per cent of drivers text while driving and 80 per cent of them admitted to having lost concentration while doing so.
