Brussels raid gunman identified as Algerian

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The Belgian authorities have identified a terrorist suspect killed Tuesday in a police raid in Brussels linked to November’s Paris attacks as Algerian national Belkaid Mohamed.

"This person resided in the country illegally and was unknown to police and justice except for one case of theft in 2014" Belgian public prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Wednesday.

On Tuesday four police officers were injured during a counter-terrorism raid in the suburb of Forest. A mixed team of four Belgian and two French police officers conducted a house search at 2.15 p.m. local time [1315 GMT].

"From the moment the door of the flat was opened at least two persons armed with a riot gun and a Kalashnikov opened fire towards them" the public prosecutor said.

"In the short but intense shoot-out three of the six officers suffered slight injuries amongst which a French female police officer." In the following hours prosecutors said another Belgian police officer was injured slightly but the statement did not elaborate further.

Two suspects are still at large.

Daesh claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks which killed 130 people. Many of the attackers had links to Belgium and police carried out a series of raids in Brussels in the days after the Nov. 13 atrocity.

Most of the suspects either died during the attacks or were later killed in police raids. Eleven have been charged in Belgium in connection with the murders and a further eight are still in detention.
