The Muscat Municipal Council has passed a resolution that allows commercial activities from more residential areas and regularises businesses operating from front-row villas.

Eng Zuhair Abdul Ridha al Lawati a council representative from Muttrah and deputy head of its Legal Committee said 'There are only certain areas in the capital region where business houses and residential villas co-exist like the 18 November Street and Al Sarooj. Also there are some areas where businesses operate from front-row villas - near service lanes leading from Al Sarooj to Al Khuwayr.'

Consent to operate from villas

He said that as areas that were earmarked for businesses are almost full 'many firms are unable to get a place to operate and had asked the council for a solution'.

'In a situation where demand is more than supply we are thinking to expand and add more areas that have front-row villas along service lanes from where businesses can operate' Eng Lawati said.

'In several areas many front-row villas are being used only as residences. If owners of these properties are ready to rent them out to businesses it might address the problem to an extent.'

Only front-row villas

Eng Lawati said that as per the new resolution villas that are not in the front row cannot be used for business. 'Earlier many businesses were found to be operating from villas located beyond the first row. These businesses have been asked to vacate because of problems faced by people in nearby residences.'

Such businesses in old Muttrah area have been given time till December 31 2020 to vacate; in other areas the deadline is December 31 this year.
