Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen Conference raises USD 223mln in aid pledges

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) DOHA Feb 24 (KUNA) -- The Qatar-hosted Yemeni Humanitarian Crisis Conference concluded late Wednesday after raising about USD 223 million of aid pledges to help ease the suffering of Yemeni people.In in a final statement the organizers noted that the Qatar Charity and the Kuwait-based the International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) pledged USD 100 million per each.Moreover Qatari Red Crescent Society and Qatari-based Silatech initiative donated USD 10 million and USD 5 million respectively. The UK-based Human Appeal and Qatar-based Reach Out to Asia Organization the Islamic Dawa Organization (Qatar's bureau) pledged USD five million USD 2 million and USD 1 million respectively.The statement added that the donations would be used to meet the growing needs of the conflict-stricken Arab country in various sectors mainly humanitarian education healthcare and housing.The conferees agreed on effective mechanisms for cooperation and coordination to avoid duplication of moves or initiatives. The three-day conference themed "Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen....Challenges and Prospects for Humanitarian Response" was organized by Qatar Charity and attended by at least 90 regional and international humanitarian organizations and more than 150 experts and specialists in relief and humanitarian fields.It sought to unite the visions of partners about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen exchange information promote follow-up mechanisms for determining needs and distribution of aids according to geographic areas and develop action plans and initiatives between partners.Sessions and workshops focused on assessment of the humanitarian situation in Yemen identification of needs in multiple humanitarian sectors such as education health water and sanitation livelihoods economic empowerment shelter food and protection.
