Algeria fortifies border in anticipation of attacks

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The Algerian army has been reinforcing security measures along the country's eastern and southern borders with Libya Mali and Niger as a precautionagainst possible terror attacks an Algerian security source said.

"The new fortifications aim to thwart suicide and terrorist attacks against Algerian army forces" the source told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday. "The move also aims to secure more than 100000 soldiers stationed along the southern border with Mali and Niger and Algeria's eastern border with Libya."

The Algerian move comes amid speculation about a potential military intervention by the West against Daesh-linked groups in the region.

"Algerian authorities fear threats posed by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in northern Mali and Daesh-linked groups in Libya" Algerian journalist Boalam Fawzi told Anadolu Agency.

Algeria has deployed thousands of troops along the border with Libya which fell into chaos since the 2011 ouster and death of Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi.

"The army has deployed more than 100000 troops along border with Mali Niger and Libya" Algerian security expert Mohamed Tawati told Anadolu Agency.

He said that Mali has been a battlefield for years between Qaeda-linked groups and the Malian army and allied French forces.

"Algerian authorities are worried that chaos in Libya could spell over into Algeria via their 982km borderline" Tawati said.
