Empty Quarter expedition team to reach Muscat today

The Empty Quarter Expedition team will return to Muscat from Doha on Sunday. The team will be received at the airport by H E Ali bin Khalfan al Jabri Undersecretary in the Ministry of Information.

The team which reached Doha on Wednesday was received by Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al Thani president of the Qatar Olympic Committee at the historic Al Rayyan fort.

The fort was the destination of the 1930 expedition conducted by Bertram Thomas and his colleague Sheikh Saleh bin Kalut stated a press release.

Among the other dignitaries who received the team in Doha were Salah bin Ghanem al Ali Qatar's Minister of Youth and Sports Qatari government officials and representatives from the Omani Embassy in Doha.

The Empty Quarter team included two Omani explorers Mohammed al Zadjali and Amour al Wahaibi besides British explorer Mark Evans. They began their expedition from Salalah in December and travelled through Saudi Arabia to reach Doha.

The expedition which was originally expected to take 60 days was completed in just 49 days.
