US Iraq working to locate Americans reportedly kidnapped in Baghdad


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The United States and Iraq are working to find several missing Americans who were reportedly kidnapped in Baghdad.

State Department spokesman John Kirby said Sunday the U.S. is aware of the reports but did not confirm the number of people missing or give additional details.

"We are working with the full cooperation of the Iraqi authorities to locate and recover the individuals" Kirby said.

U.S. Embassy spokesman Scott Bolz also said they were working to locate the Americans but he did not identify the missing them or say what they were doing in Iraq according to The Associated Press.

The Arab news channel al-Arabiya reported that three Americans were taken by militias in the Iraqi capital.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility.

Dozens of foreigners have been kidnapped in Iraq over the last few months by terrorists and militias helping Iraqi forces battle the Islamic State group.

The U.S. is leading a coalition of countries that have bombed thousands of IS targets in Iraq and Syria and which are providing training to Baghdad's forces.
