Doha to Host for Asian Indoor Athletics in February


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Qatar will host Asian Indoor Athletics Championship from February 19-21 in Aspire with 450 athletes representing 36 countries taking part.

President of the Asian and Qatari Athletics Association Dahlan Al Hamad held a press conference in Doha today and expressed the association's delight at hosting the event. He also extended his congratulations to the country's leadership and the Qatari people on the National Day, which was celebrated last Friday.

He said that hosting the event is in line of Qatar National Vision 2030, which aspires to holding prominent international sporting events. Al Hamad said that the Qatari association has good experience in organizing events and will help them well as they prepare for hosting the 2019 World Championships in Athletics.

He expected that total number of delegates to reach 600 people. He added that Qatar will participate with 25 athletes to follow up on their strong performance Guangzhou in China where Qatar won five gold medals, one more than China.

The Qatari team is one of the youngest in the competition and Al Hamad pledged that the Qatari Association will keep on investing in youth. On female participation in the competition, he said that the Qatari association has always encouraged women to take parts in sporting events. He added that their aim was to have a female champion representing Qatar in international sporting events.
