Attempted stabbing in West Bank, attacker killed: police

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A Palestinian armed with a knife approached a hitchhiking spot near a Jewish settlement bloc in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday and was shot dead by an Israeli soldier, police said.

There were no Israeli casualties in the incident near the Gush Etzion bloc, south of Jerusalem, police added.

The road junction between Bethlehem and Hebron has been the site of several attacks on Israelis in recent weeks.

Violence since October 1 has left 102 dead on the Palestinian side, including an Arab Israeli, as well as 17 Israelis, an American and an Eritrean.

Many of the Palestinians killed have been alleged attackers, while others have been shot dead by Israeli security forces during clashes.

The international community has repeatedly called for moves to reduce tensions but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to step up punitive measures.
