Cypriot president visits Amman municipality

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Visiting Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, accompanied by a high-level delegation including Paphos Mayor Phedon Phedonos, Tuesday called on the Amman Municipality to discuss cooperation between the two cities.

During the visit, Amman Mayor Aqel Beltaji and Phedonos signed a twinning agreement between Amman and Paphos for bilateral cooperation, the exchange of expertise in urban planning and infrastructure and signing a joint cooperation programme. At a meeting with the Amman Mayor and municipal council members, Anastasiades said the visit was intended to lay the cornerstone for solid ties between the two countries in economic, tourism and cultural fields and enhance mutual respect between the Jordanian and Cypriot people.

The president said the twinning agreement underscored the aspired-for bilateral cooperation.

Anastasiades said the golden key of Amman that he received today is of great significance as it signifies a city with historic depth that bears witness to successive civilizations.

The signing of the twinning agreement is a key pillar to bolster the friendship between Jordan and Cyprus, Beltaji said, noting that Amman and Paphos had a history of close relations due to their key role in trade.

He noted that Paphos had been nominated as the 2017 European city of culture while Amman was chosen as one of the world 12 learning cities, adding that the two cities will have common ground for cooperation in tourism, culture and business when the agreements signed between the two countries take effect.
