Little Vipin is unaware of what is happening in his life. The seven month-old Indian boy is lying on a hospital bed without realising that his parents' bodies have been flown home and he has become the centre of controversy for some people while he is receiving attention and compassion from many others.

The only child of his parents Vipin was orphaned in a mini bus crash in Al Ain in the wee hours of Saturday. While the crash killed his father Piruthivi Rajan pregnant mother Vineesha and a family friend Koshy Dhamodharan Vipin miraculously survived along with 22 others who were injured.

Early morning on Friday the bodies of his parents were repatriated to India. They were flown to Chennai International Airport from where they had to be transported by road for some seven hours to their hometown in Namakkal district in the state of Tamil Nadu. Their funeral was scheduled to take place later in the evening.

Many people had gathered at the Al Ain Hospital's mortuary and attended a prayer service before the bodies were taken to the Abu Dhabi International Airport late on Thursday evening.

Vipin was not taken to the ceremony as he is still under treatment in Tawam Hospital. However a woman who has flown in from his father's neighbourhood to take care of him was present said Rajan's friend Selvaraj Daniel.

"Piruthivi's (Rajan's) cousin brother who had come along with this woman travelled with the bodies" he told Khaleej Times. He said they were the only people with passports who could fly in to the UAE to deal with the repatriation of the bodies and the hospitalised baby.

The couple's friends are still taking turns to take care of the baby Rajan's colleague and friend Rajesh Anbu said from the hospital. "He is much better now. He doesn't know what is happening around him. He is happy and smiling. He is taking milk and cereals" said Anbu.

Adoption plans

Daniel said some friends of Rajan including a childless couple have come forward to adopt the baby. "But nothing can be finalised now. We need to wait for Piruthivi's father to come over for taking the baby home and also take a decision about his future."

Compassion and prayers are pouring in for him and other victims whose lives have been shattered by the deaths and the severe injuries. Fourteen of the injured are still in the hospital. A delegation from Al Ain Traffic Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police visited the injured to check on their health conditions.

"Such visits fall in line with the humanitarian duty and aim to enhance communication and interaction with community members at all times and circumstances" Lieutenant Colonel Matar Abdullah Al Muhairi who headed the delegation said in a media statement. He said the injured are in a stable condition.

Priests from different groups of churches from various emirates visited the injured and offered prayers for them and their families.

"Officials of the Indian Embassy and the Indian Social Club have been very supportive just like the Tamil community here" said Daniel.

Anbu said the Al Sanawbar School where Rajan worked as an IT technician is working on sending the final benefits and additional fund in the name of the infant.

Meanwhile the men said they were upset that some people with vested interests were politicizing the crash victims' story back home. There have been reports about political parties blaming the Embassy and claiming that it will take some months to receive the bodies of the couple from the UAE. Some others have also raised concerns about the child's future and the possibility of relatives misusing the financial benefits that should go to the child.

"We are very upset about such baseless reports and talks from India. We just hope the baby will be in safe hands with a bright future and we friends will try to help for that" said
