Qatar- Clerics urge youth to marry divorced women, widows

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Clerics and community elders have called on men eligible to marry to pick younger widows and divorcees as their wives.

Young men wanting to marry must change their attitude towards widows and divorced women and should pick them as their life partners.

Local Arabic daily Al Arab cited some study in a report yesterday which suggested that 30 percent of divorced women in Qatar are happy after their marriage ended. Another 30 percent wanted to marry again, while 20 percent were regretful and thought that they were better off when married.

The daily said that while society looked differently at men marrying for the second time, second marriage for women was not so welcome. The East as a whole looked down upon second marriage of women.

But the daily interviewed several young Qatari men who said they would gladly pick a young widow or divorcee as wife if she was a good person.

Ali bin Khalifa said that if he marries he wouldn't be bothered if his prospective wife is a widow or divorcee as long as she is a person of good character and homely. "The woman must be a good house-maker," said Ali in remarks to the daily.

Jaber Mohamed said men generally want their first wives to be virgin. "However, if a divorcee is educated and good and was a victim, there is no harm in marrying her."

Mohamed Saad Al Sulaiti, yet another Qatari, said widows and divorced women are part of "our community" and they also have rights. "They should not be socially isolated."

Mubarak Al Buanain said to think about widows and divorcees as prospective life partner is a noble thought.

"This attitude should be encouraged in the community. Youths should be made aware and encouraged to marry these vulnerable women," he said. This would help widows and divorcees to be part of the social mainstream again. They would be rehabilitated.
