Saudi- Transport Ministry warns illegal drivers of stiff penalties

(MENAFN- Arab News) RIYADH: The Ministry of Transport has promised stern action against anyone who transports any female teacher without having a contract with her and/or her kin.
'Application of the rule will be from the beginning of next week' said Hathloul Al-Hathloul the ministry spokesman.
'The biggest violation is that drivers do not have licenses' he said. 'Many do not have an istimara (vehicle ownership papers).'
He said that drivers frequently alter the status of the vehicle without the agreement of the Transport Ministry and begin transporting teachers without a contract.
Al-Hathloul stated that the ministry will slap a hefty fine on violating drivers. He said the penalties range from SR500 to SR5000.
He said the ministry follows up on transportation of women teachers through licensed drivers.
Transportation is a very big problem that causes a real headache for female employees and sometimes housewives in the Kingdom.
Women face many obstacles if they want to go from one place to another particularly if they are not accompanied by their spouses or do not have their own drivers.
Based on a series of experiences by some employed women they say a woman has either has to use a taxi with a foreigner she doesn't know and take the risk she might face especially at night or she could bring a driver from his country but still there is the possibility of losing him at any time for any reason.
In some cases employed women tend to go to private companies that provide cars for women but when that is done they have to pay higher charges than normal.
One woman said that she faced great difficulties when going to work. Many drivers ask for a lot of money and she had also suffered harassment. She also said that there should be strict regulations to prevent greedy drivers from exploiting working women.
Tahani M. a Saudi woman said that she had many problems when trying to find a driver. Once a driver asked for SR2000 per month to transport her to work and bring her home every day.
Ayisha S. another Saudi said she had had many problems since her father died. She has no brother and finding a good driver had been a problem. Many of them she said were impolite greedy or irresponsible.
